Page Hit Counters
What is a Counter?

A Counter, or Page Hit Counter, to be more precise, is an object on a webpage that displays how many times the page has been viewed.  It is a measurement of how many times the page was downloaded by each visitor and viewed in the web browser.

How it Works

The Counter object that is put on a webpage is made of special HTML code and it functions by connecting with a special program on a web server that records the page views.  The Counter itself is not a program, but only an extension of the program on the server.  By itself, the Counter object does nothing.  Many Hosts have such programs on their web servers that you can utilize.

When the webpage with a Counter object on it is displayed in a web browser, the webpage communicates with a web server's Counter program.  The Counter program records the page view and sends the appropriate information back to the Counter object and the Counter shows the correct digits representing page views.

The Counter digits that get displayed can be text or images, depending upon the Counter program on the web server.  Most free counter services use a set of 10 image digits, 0-9.

There are many web companies that offer free Counter services.  You go to their website and sign up for the free service and you are given a member code and the Counter HTML code to put on your webpage.

Drag+Drop Counters

The Cool Page program comes with several preconfigured Counter objects.  They are in the Counters section of the
Objects window.  They can be dragged right onto your page and instantlty customized
or activated using the member code from the counter service website.
Other Counters

You are not limited to the Counter objects that come with the Cool Page program.  Any counter can be used on a page.  Signup for a free Counter service and insert the Counter code on your page using the
HTML Object Tool.

The drag+drop Counters in the Cool Page Objects window have been tested and thay are known to be reliable.  The code supplied by other Counter services may not be standard HTML code.  For this reason, we recommend using the drag+drop Counters to ensure that your page will display correctly in web browsers.
